Annual Report of the General Secretary – 2021 (For the year 2020-21)

Mr. President and Members of this august gathering,

It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you to this Annual General Body and Budget meeting today i.e. on 20 th March 2021. Even today because of this pandemic members are taking precautions so we are conducting this meeting both offline and online. I take this opportunity in presenting this report before you. In fact because of the pandemic 2019-20 annual report was presented before you on 28-08- 2020. Therefore, here I will be discussing the details of the Society’s activities and action taken during September 2020 to March 2021 which are as follows:

  • The most important event of the year for the Society is that we got the possession of the plot for construction of Majumdar Bhawan on 5/3/2021 from LDA at Janki Puram.We have started construction on it and the first phase ,i.e.,construction of gate with boundary wall is almost completed.The second phase ,i.e.,construction of the building will start soon and once we complete at least one floor then we will move there.
  • Regarding journals: I am glad to announce that The Eastern Anthropologist is on its 74 th year of uninterrupted publication. The no.1 issue of 2021 i.e. of the Vol.74 is in the press. The Indian Journal of Physical Anthropology and Human Genetics is also doing very well Society’s third journal Manav is also being published regularly: Vol. 38, 2020, joint issue of Manav is in the press.
  • The K. S. Mathur Library continues to attract students and research scholars from the University and colleges and we are adding some books regularly.
  • The D. N. Majumdar Museum is being maintained with a limited space.
  • Conference/Workshop/Lectures:

    You will be glad to know that the Society collaborated in three national seminars during this period. All the three were held in the department of Sociology, University of Lucknow.

    • A two Days National E-Seminar on “Ecological Crises and Climate Change in the Himalayan Region” organised by Society for Himalayan Environment and People’s Action (SHERPA) in collaboration with Department of Sociology, University of Lucknow and Ethnographic and Folk Culture Society (EFCS) was held on 16-17 December, 2020. It had many eminent speakers including Prof. Paramjit Singh Judge, Prof. S. M. Patnaik, Prof. D. R. Sahu, Prof. P. S. Vivek , Dr. B. W. Pandey, Dr. Farhat Naz, Prof. Kumkum Dhar among others.
    • The introductory session for the International Sociological Association (ISA) Forum was organized on 24 th Feb. 2021. It was presided over by Sri G. Pattnaik and the Guest of Honour was Prof. Rakesh Chandra.
    • The third National Seminar is going on here on “Social Ecology, Environment and Sustainable Development in Uttar Pradesh: Issues and Challenges”. it is being held on 20-21 March 2021 in the auspices of Centre for Excellence of the Department.
  • I wish to report that 3 new life members have joined the Society. They are as follows:
    • Dr. Lovitoli Jimo, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Ambedkar University, Delhi.
    • Dr. Jyoti Sidana, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Government Arts Girls College, Kota, Rajsthan.
    • Dr. Mandakini Baruah, Assistant Professor, Department of Cultural Studies, Tezpur, Assam.
  • With regret, I would like to inform you that some Life Members of the Society passed away: Prof. Vinay Kumar Srivastava, Director, Anthropological Survey of India (23 December 2020), Prof. A. R. N. Srivastava, Retd. Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Allahabad (22 October 2020), Prof. A. M. Shah, Retd. Professor, Department of Sociology, Delhi University (7 September 2020), Prof. R. B. S. Verma, Retd. Professor, Department of Social Work, University of Lucknow (11 January 2021). Condolence meetings were held where members mentioned about their contribution to the Society. Messages of condolence were sent to the bereaved families.
  • Proposed activities for 2020-21:
    • Efforts are taken to complete the construction of Majumdar Bhawan, for which fund raising will be done through the Executive Committee Members and Life Members.
    • To organize Webinars/Workshops/D.N. Majumdar Memorial and K.S. Mathur Lectures.
    • To publish volumes out of selected papers from The Eastern Anthropologist.
    • To achieve successfully the above proposed activities, I solicit active co-operation of all members and members of the Executive Committee in particular. I am sure we will solve all the problems and march ahead together.
